First Ideas.

I have looked at many music videos over the last few days and I have sorted through a few genres of music that I may want to choose and these are a few genres and artist that I will want to do a music video for.

Rock

30 Seconds to Mars - The Fantasy
Blink 182 - I Miss You

Folk

Bon Iver - For Emma
Bob Dylan - Times are a changin'

I decided to go with a song from Bon Iver but I then found a cover that he had done called The Park orginally by Feist. That is the song I have chosen to do.

Music Video Analysis

Goodwin's 6 point analysis of music videos:

1. Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics?
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and video?
3. There is a relationship between the music and the video?
4. Selling the artist. The demands of the record label will include the need for a lot of closeups of the artist
5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programs, other music videos etc).

Hallucinations - Angels and Airwaves

1. Band playing and singling lyrics. This is common in most rock/indie music videos so that it creates awareness of the artist.
2. There doesn't seem to be any relationship between the lyrics and the video.
3. Specific cuts when drum beats or music changing tone. Lights and flashes more frequent when the chorus comes up. At the start of the song there are views of a cityscape and planes landing. Giving the band an epic appearance.
4. Lots of closeups on the lead singer and also the other band members when they are playing their instruments as the instruments are the key focus of how they are a rock band.
5. Plenty of shots of the band members looking at the audience into the camera. One of the band members also wears glasses. The item of 'looking'
6. No intertextual references to tv or film. They may want to keep the audience focus on the band members.

Holocene - Bon Iver

1. Cannot see the person singing the song. Set up more like a story. Although the majority of his music videos are a story and not him actually playing the guitar and singing.
2. Small relationship between the lyrics and video. The great view and the icebergs but I think that it is just their to create a relationship between the beautiful scenery and the music. (Trying to suggest that the music is beautiful.)
3. No relationship between the music and the video. we are just shown a child having fun in a cold country on his own. May trigger reminiscing for people about childhood.
4. The artist isn't seen in the whole music video. More reliant on the music than the artist. He wants to create a video in which the music and the scenery will go together to make the music and the artist better.
5. Amazing scenery to catch the audiences eye but there is no eye contact between the child in the video and the audience. The audience is almost 'tagging' along with the child seeing a day in the life for example. Makes you feel like you are there with him enjoying the amazing views.
6. None but you are lead to believe that the setting is somewhere cold like iceland or greenland.

The Task

For my A2 coursework this year I have been asked to create:
A Music Video Promo
A cover for the album/single's release
A magazine advertisement for the Single/album

I will have to manage my time efficiently in order to finish all of the tasks by the end deadline of the 19th of December.
The first thing I have been doing is looking at other more professional music videos in order to get inspiration for mine.

First post.

This is the first post on my A2 media blog. I have begun this coursework by starting to look at music videos for inspiration. I have not decided what video I will go for yet but I will pick one soon.
